International Admissions

International Admissions WomanIn addition to the minimum requirements, International applicants must receive a T.O.E.F.L. score of at least 213 on the computer based exam, 550 on the paper based exam, 79 on the internet based (iBT) exam, or the following section scores: Reading – 20; Speaking – 19; Listening – 21 and Writing – 17. A test score of at least 6.0 will also be accepted from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). International applicants with test scores in other areas may also be eligible for admissions.

Applicants should submit their applications together with a financial affidavit and TOEFL scores (if their primary language is not English) as early as possible, because additional time is required to process these applications.

If a student is admitted to the School of Social Work prior to the completion of his or her bachelor’s degree, the admission is contingent upon the school’s receipt of evidence of graduation and the supplemental transcript of any undergraduate or graduate work in progress at the time of acceptance.

You must also present a Declaration and Certification of Finances and a supporting bank letter, showing financial support to attend the University of New England.

So, you are saying that anyone who got their undergrad degree outside the US is considered an international student? What about someone who is now a permanent resident? After all, permanent residents are eligible for financial aid, so why is the bank statement necessary?

      Anna,
If you graduated with your Bachelors outside the U.S., you are considered an international student. An Enrollment Advisor will contact you to discuss your residency and financial aid concerns. Thanks for your interest!

So are Canadian’s considered “international students”, and would we be required to complete the TOEFL exam?

      Hi Mark,
Canadians are considered international students. You would not need to complete the TOEFL, but we would need to have the transcripts evaluated. An Enrollment Advisor will be glad to further discuss this process with you soon.

Becky, all applicants that studied in another country do need a transcript evaluation for not only for accreditation purposes but for grade point averages. Did your school give GPAs?

Hi, I am a nigerian but studied in United kingdom from my GCSE to my BSc. My Master degree was in Brentwood USA, I have returned back to Nigeria to take up an employment. Do I need TOEFL scores or (IELTS) since I lived and studied in an English speaking country?

Floxy, the only reason you would need to take the TOEFL is if you first language isn’t English. If it is, then you should be fine. Also, if any of your education was outside of the US, then you would need to get those evaluated.
If English is not your first language, you are required to submit official scores from one of the following test agencies:
      – Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which is administered by ETS http://www.ets.org
(A score of 213 on the computer-based test is required; or a score of 550 on the paper test is required)
      OR
      - The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) whose website is http://www.ielts.org.
(A score of 6.0 on the test module is required)

Helen, as long as you have high speed internet to meet with your field instructor and field advisor on a regular basis via webcam and you also the field placement will need to meet UNE requirements. In general, you should be able to do so. Our Adanvced Standing program is approximately 2 years to complete

I have a BS in Communication Studies but am interested in getting my MSW. I am currently living and doing aid work in a developing nation. Would it be possible for me to complete the MSW online program and do my field practicum in the developing nation where I am currently living?

      Heather,

Our program is available to those that are living outside of the United States. It is 100% distance learning based. All of the courses are completed through the course website and the field hours are completed in the student’s local area.

I am an American Citizen and graduated from my BSW program from a university in the US (accredited by CSWE) in 2007. I am currently a permanent resident in Canada and working and living in Canada. Am I able to do the advanced standing program living in Canada as long as I start by the fall of 2014? What are the requirements for this? Also, is there financial aid available for someone like me?

    Good morning,

I have a bachelors degree in psychology which I competed at Nova Southeastern University and a graduate degree in chld neuropsychology from the Pontificia Javeriana University fron Colombia (Which was already reviewed and accredited by WES).I am interested in completing the online MSW program. At the moment I am livig in Colombia but will move back to Florida in June of 2013.
Meanwhile I woould like to start studying. My concern is the practicum. How does it works with international students? Can I start my practicum when I get to FL and take more classes instead?. Can I complete the program in less than 4 years? Do I have to take the ESOL even if I obtained my bachelors at Nova?
I also completed 24 credits from a masters in mental health counseling at Nova. Can I transfer some credits?
    Cordially,
    Sabrina Mautner
