Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Work

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers are also known as clinical social workers. They typically hold a professional degree in social work and have obtained a license or are professionally registered. Most social workers will start with a bachelor’s degree in social work, but often progress into a master’s degree in social work or a doctoral degree to obtain more advanced positions and provide better service.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers are frequently employed by hospitals, substance abuse treatment centers, individual and family services agencies, and local governments. They are instrumental in assessing and treating individuals with mental illness or substance abuse problems, including alcohol, tobacco, or other drug abuse.

The University of New England’s Master of Social Work online option prepares social workers to provide their clients with a wide range of support. Students will learn advanced techniques and develop their skills performing individual and group therapy, outreach, crisis intervention, social rehabilitation, and teaching the skills needed for everyday living. In addition to helping patients on their journey to recovery, these social workers also help transition them back into society.
