Social Work Degrees
– Why Choose UNE?
There are many reasons to choose the University of New England’s Master of Social Work over similar social work degrees:
- Innovative Education – The master’s degree in social work helps to prepare students for advanced practice as professional social workers. The master’s degree online option features the same comprehensive education and courses that are delivered on campus, with the convenience and innovation of an online learning environment. Develop the skills you’ll need to play an active role creating positive outcomes in health and mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, poverty and public welfare, women’s and children’s services, domestic violence, homelessness, and other emerging areas of need.
- Delivered Online – The online interface and course delivery system allows students to earn their MSW degree on their schedule. With access from anywhere with a connection to the Internet, the School of Social Work provides its thorough and in-depth Master of Social Work program to working professionals, and active students from around the world. Students are encouraged to interact as they would on campus via direct online interaction with instructors and other students.
- Open to a Range of Students – Social workers are passionate about helping others, and the School of Social Work realizes that caring people come from a variety of different educational backgrounds. That’s why the Master of Social Work online option is open to any student holding a bachelor’s degree who is interested and passionate about helping other people and making the world a better place to live. This diverse range of students can help create better social workers and bring new and powerful insight into the profession.
- Accreditation is Important – When your goal is to become a licensed social worker, accreditation is very important. The University of New England is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) which means if you chose to pursue your doctorate, your degree will be accepted at other regionally accredited universities. The School of Social Work is also accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), which is responsible for developing national accreditation standards for social work education. If you graduate from a CSWE accredited school you may qualify for your license to practice social work.
- Prepares You for Licensure – The goal of UNEs MSW degree is to prepare students with the knowledge and skills they’ll need to become a licensed social worker, and build a career helping others. The only way to become a licensed social worker is to begin by earning your degree from a CSWE accredited school like UNE. Our Master of Social Work online option is CSWE accredited and designed as an accelerated and comprehensive online education.
- Academic Excellence – In 2010, U.S. News & World Report has recognized UNE as one of the “Best Universities” in the North that offer “a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs.”

I will being the Advanced Standing track this coming fall, and have been brain storming about what my practicum would look like. Is it possible to arrange an international practicum location?
Jessica, Enrollment Coordinator - August 4th, 2010 at 08:57pm
Hi Laurie,
The Advanced Standing Track is available for those who have received their BSW within the last 7 years. You may, however, be eligible for our Traditional Track. An Enrollment Advisor will contact you to discuss admission requirements.
Meg - February 10th, 2011 at 07:19am
Hi I have just completed my first year of MSW at another Uni. Due to new work commitments I will find it difficult to attend the Uni. Am I eligible for UNE MSW? Would I get RPL for subjects already done? What are the Practicuum hours required? Do you get recognition if you have worked in the community sector for many years?

Jessica, Enrollment Coordinator - August 4th, 2010 at 08:59pm
Hi Roger,
With no campus or residency requirements, our online option will allow you to complete your MSW while living abroad.
Jessica, Enrollment Coordinator - August 4th, 2010 at 09:01pm
Hi Allyson,
Congratulations! We look forward to having you in our Advanced Standing program. Your Program Manager will contact you to discuss the Field Practicum and any other questions you may have.
Lucia - August 6th, 2010 at 09:47pm
I was accepted into another MSW program which I can complete in 2 years. However, the online program requires one to have a webcam and to sit in a chat room at a designated time each week in addition to Blackboard requirements. Do you have such a requirement?
Alexis - August 13th, 2010 at 01:38pm
I graduated with my bachelors degree in Human Services – same thing as social work- my GPA was a 3.5
Is there any way I can submit for the advanced standing track even if the title isn’t technically “bachelors in social work”
Can a panel review the classes I took to see they are the same as social work?
Crystal - August 14th, 2010 at 03:42am
I started an online masters program through Liberty U. in Human Services…and it is accredited. Would it be possible to transfer any of these credits, even as elective courses? I would hate to lose out on what I have already completed…..which is a little over 20 hours. Thank you!
Tia - August 15th, 2010 at 05:43am
I would like to know does the State of North Carolina allow licensure once completing MSW with University of New England?
Brian Jones - September 30th, 2010 at 06:50pm
My wife is in the MSW program at the University of Southern Indiana. She has two classes this spring yet to take (6) hours, plus her field practicum. My job is relocating me to TN. Her school will arrange for her to complete her field work in TN. They will also accept 6 hours of transfer into her program. Will you allow a student to take a couple of classes next spring online? How can we know what classes are offered this coming spring.
Thanks,
University of New England Admissions - October 14th, 2010 at 01:37pm
Brian, we do not offer non-matriculating classes for the online option.
Sonya - October 11th, 2010 at 10:37pm
Has this MSW program, yet been approved for licensing in NY State?
Alexandra - February 20th, 2011 at 05:57pm
Is your program approved for licensing in New York?
Alexandra - October 12th, 2010 at 07:31pm
For the traditional track do you need to complete all the begining classes before you enter the first field internship?
Then complete all the advanced classes in order to begin the last field internship?
Also what kind of field internship should the student look for is anything Okay as long as a licensed MSW is your supervisor?
University of New England Admissions - November 5th, 2010 at 01:33pm
Alexandra, approximately seven months prior to the practicum, students will complete an online field orientation. The student will also be arranging an appointment with their field advisor via phone or video conference to assist in the process as well; tips on interviewing with placements and finding a field instructor. You can visit our FAQ’s page regarding our field placement at http://socialwork.une.edu/frequently-asked-questions-field-education/

George, I believe that with your graduate degree, you would balance out your undergraduate GPA. Your enrollment advisor would be happy to discuss the program in more depth with you.
Kelly R - October 15th, 2010 at 01:24pm
Hi,
I graduated with a BSW in 2001. I have read that one must have completed the BSW program within the past 7 years. What is the reasoning behind that policy? Thank you.
jessica - October 16th, 2010 at 07:26pm
If your GPA is under 2.75 is it assumed that you won’t even be considered?
Reese - October 21st, 2010 at 02:20am
I am completing my BSW at a school that is still working through the requirements for CWSE certification. Do I have to wait the remaining 3 years before I can apply for advanced standing. I meet the other requirements. Thank you.
Tabitha - October 27th, 2010 at 09:30pm
Hello,
I am interested in the Masters degree program, though I am not entirely sure if I would do online or not. I have a question about the advanced standing track. I have my Bachelors in Human Services, and looking at my degree in comparison to that of a BSW it is very similar would I be able to fast track and complete my masters in two years if I was able to prove my degree is comparable to a BSW.
Thank you
mph - January 2nd, 2011 at 11:12pm
I have a BS in sociology and am working on my MPH. Are you accredited in Massachusetts?
Sandra - January 3rd, 2011 at 12:28pm
Good morning. I have reviewed your website as well as the FAQs. My question is regarding the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Currently funding for housing allowance is not provided for students who are enrolled exclusively in online courses. It appears, however, that with the practicum requirements, this program would not be considered completely online. Can you elaborate on this?
Ann - January 6th, 2011 at 02:00am
Can a student live in MA, PA, or CA and complete the MSW advanced standing program?
University of New England Admissions - January 13th, 2011 at 03:05pm
Ann, the University of New England is regionally accredited through the New England Association of Schools and College and the Master of Social Work program is accredited through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).If you would like to learn more about your own state requirements for licensure in social work, please visit the Association of Social Work Boards: ASWB
David - January 26th, 2011 at 07:04pm
My question is I was a returning student who graduated with a B.S. in Sociology. However, when I left college 20+ years a go my GPA was not very good and I had a lot of completed hours. Since coming back to school I kept a 3.0+ GPA when I graduated. Unfortunately my overall GPA is a 2.7. Is there anyway to get accepted into your MSW program? Is there a process I can go through to qualify?
University of New England Admissions - February 1st, 2011 at 11:47pm
David, one of the admissions requirements for the program is that applicants have a 3.0 in the last 60 credits of their undergraduate degree.
If your GPA is lower than a 3.0, there are two ways that you can help your chances of being accepted. One way is to have 5 or more years of experience in the social work field. Another way is to have taken a couple of graduate level courses in a related area of study and maintained a B average.
If either of these situations are true, then your chances of being accepted with increase greatly. Otherwise, it is suggested to take graduate level courses before applying to our program.
Elizabeth - January 27th, 2011 at 12:41pm
Hi,
I currently have a BS in Human Services and 30 credit towards my MSW. I have worked for the New York City, Administration for Children Services in a social worker position. I am currently working in a social worker position in another state. Will this qualify me for the advance standing track.
University of New England Admissions - February 17th, 2011 at 08:48pm
Elizabeth, unfortunately, no, you wouldn’t qualify necessarily for the Advanced standing track status. However, the 30 credits you have for your MSW currently could work towards our courses to allow you to finish in the same amount of time as an Advanced standing student. As long as the courses come from an accredited school, match our course descriptions and you received a B or better in the courses, they may be transferrable.
Jocelyne Coan - February 12th, 2011 at 01:18pm
I received my BSW in 2000 and have been practicing Social Work since then. I currently work in a County DSS for Child Protective Services. Would I be a candidate for the Advanced Standing MSW program even though it has been more than 7 years since earning my BSW?
University of New England Admissions - February 17th, 2011 at 08:45pm
Jocelyne, unfortunately, UNE’s policy for acceptance in the Advanced Standing Track is to have completed your BSW within the last 7 years. You may however be eligible for the Traditional Track.
Meaghan - February 23rd, 2011 at 01:43pm
Hi,
I see that the traditional track program takes four years to complete.. are there any means of acceleration on this track? Can you take more than 6 credit hours per semester? Ideally I’d like to finish this program in 2.5 years or less. I do not have a BA in Social Work, I was a Political Science major.. Any thoughts?
University of New England Admissions - February 26th, 2011 at 05:19pm
Meaghan, through the entire program you will take one class at a time, each class lasting 8 weeks in length. Our program is structured in a way that it is manageable for a student that cannot take a full load of courses because of other responsibilities.
Sandra - March 6th, 2011 at 03:04pm
I have completed one year of an MSW program. Is your program accepting transfer students at this time?
University of New England Admissions - March 16th, 2011 at 10:16pm
Sandra, yes we do accept transfer students. Students from other graduate schools of social work, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, who desire admission to the second year of the UNE School of Social Work, must have completed a full year of graduate study with a B average and acceptable field work evaluations. Credit is not given for graduate work that was completed more than five years prior to admission to UNE. A transfer student must satisfactorily complete a minimum of thirty (30) credit hours at the School of Social Work in order to earn a degree from the University of New England.
Liz - April 11th, 2011 at 10:24pm
For fincial aid and tax purposes, would a student enrolled in the MSW graduate online program be considered a “part-time” or “full-time” student?
Mark - April 12th, 2011 at 04:41am
Will this online MSW allow a student to sit for the New York State licensing examination?
Ellen - June 1st, 2011 at 06:29pm
Does your online MSW program meet the accredation, certifications and licensure required by New York State?
UNE Admissions - June 21st, 2011 at 12:59pm
Ellen,
We have heard that the Board of Regents in NY has updated their website to include information on acceptable MSW programs. We haven’t gotten a blanket approval from the state as of yet, but several students have gotten individual approval for this program.
Please visit the Association of Social Work Boards website: http://www.aswb.org/. Or you can contact the following:

If I am accepted to program, can you back out? If so, what are reasons and What is deadline?
Sarah - June 22nd, 2011 at 09:38am
Is the UNE MSW program open to international students (I live in Canada)?
Adrienne - July 4th, 2011 at 02:18am
I went to a non-traditional undergraduate college (Goddard College) and graduated with an IBA (Individualized BA) in Arts Integration and Literacy Development. While the program is accredited, due to the progressive nature of Goddard’s pedagogy, I did not complete formal coursework and was not given formal grades, therefore do not have a GPA. Am I still eligible for this program?

I hold a BS in Sociology and have worked in the Federal Prison for 25 years. I am now retired, relativetly young, and has always wanted to be a social worker. Would your MSW program prepare me for an entry level career as a Social Worker in the state of NC?
Rosemarie - August 17th, 2011 at 12:52am
I completed my first year of coursework including my first year of field practicum toward my MSW degree at University of Buffalo. I withdrew from the program in 2008 (related to a death in my family). I have two questions:
1) Since I completed my first year of field placement, will this count toward UNE’s requirements for field practicum?
2) Can the Gerontology Certificate Program also be completed online?
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!
tarina - August 20th, 2011 at 08:07pm
Is there any plans to change this? If it were not for the extremely long completion period, I would have already applied. Instead, I am spending a whole lot of time trying to find another program that completes in 2 years.
Erica - September 1st, 2011 at 08:01pm
I live in Dubai and would like to apply for your msw program- is this possible?
Jennifer Staton - September 2nd, 2011 at 04:02am
My fiance and I may be overseas for 6 months out of each year. Could this program still be completed if I am overseas for half of the year and in the US for half of the year? I will be graduating with a BSW in 2012 and currently have a 3.23 GPA.

Hi,
I have a B.S. in Interdiscplinary studies/Criminal Justice. I’ve worked in the D.O.E. for several years as a Para, but do Administrative duties. My GPA is a 2.9. I know there’s other ways to qualify for the MSW program, but how do I go about taking Grad. coures to boost my GPA. Most schools require at 3.0 to be admitted.
THANKS!
Elizabeth - December 31st, 2011 at 12:16am
I am in my third term at UNE and I have found that it is everything that you are looking for in a on line college. I was determine to find a college that was online and would allow me to continue to work and raise a family and UNE is that college. I am working on my MSW degree and i have no regrets.
Janelle - January 11th, 2012 at 05:22am
I am interested in your online MSW program. However, I had a 2.933 GPA in the last 60 credits that I took for my BSW. Would I still be able to get into the online advanced standing program?

Hello, I received my BA in Liberal Arts from Hamphshire College. Hampshire is ‘non-traditional’, and does not give grades or use GPA’s, but is a well-respected liberal arts college. How will my transcript affect my application and chances of admission?
